ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is about Pam and many other women's experiences; it is about the depth, range and diversity of feelings that miscarriage engenders. And in addressing issues like the physical process of the miscarriage, the nature of the loss and disposal, the author have attempted to demystify the experience of miscarriage. The book is based on the experience of more than 350 women. She interviewed at length 30 women from different walks of life and their experience was varied. The Guidelines for good practice on page 215 summarises all the practical implications that are made throughout the text of the book. The self-help movement, the Miscarriage Association and Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (SANDS) have continued to promote pregnancy loss as an issue of public concern as well as offering support, information and advice to women and health professionals.
