ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the short-term difficulties in returning to work, and the longer-term effect miscarriage may have on one's feelings about his/her job. The impact a miscarriage has on one's working life is largely unrecognised. Returning to work can be very stressful. Miscarriage one will have to face people with whom they are not necessarily very close but who will know of their absence and for whom some explanation may be necessary. They will be returning to work a different person in some respects. Plans may have been made for maternity leave or for them to leave work and their colleagues will have to adjust their expectations of them. If their colleagues are not so sensitive, returning to work when they still feel vulnerable can be something of an ordeal. It depends on the sort of work they do, how they feel about it and the relationship they have with their colleagues and employer.
