Thinking embraces many different kinds of activity which may have little in common. Psychologists have tended to study thinking by attempting to divide and classify types of activity which could be investigated separately. Lawson (1990) suggested that the most well used division was that between ‘reasoning’ and ‘imagining’, both of which he explained were obviously needed in the context of design activity.
