ABSTRACT
Throughout our analysis the intimate relation between language and culture has become more and more prominent ; and we can now appreciate how unfounded and dangerous is the assumption that language simply mirrors reality. Even more dangerous is the fallacy of “one word—one idea—one piece of reality”. And let me remind you that this fallacy is by no means the laid ghost of past anthropological errors. The whole discussion about the sociological relevance of kinship terminologies, for instance, is based on the view that “Nothing gives more insight into the intimate nature of social organisation than the mode of naming relatives”. 2
