While there are good reasons for attending to social and psychological processes common to all prisons, it is also a necessarycaution to definea narrower empirical class of prisons that are more obviously similar to Bristol and hence to which the findings of this study may more readily be extended. It is also necessaryto describe the concrete features of Bristol Prison, since they provide the setting for the processes being studied.
