Anders claims that because 'they know not what they do' the monstrousness of the act makes possible a new, diabolical innocence. Perhaps there is true individual ignorance, but is there also innocence and a collective ignorance? How sound is the connection between innocence and ignorance? Is Anders's assumption that the actions of mass destruction are possible only or mainly because they differ qualitatively as well as quantitatively from individual murder soundly based?
