Social roles and institutions: is community love?

Mackenzie has called institutions ‘social facts which change relatively slowly’.2 By this he means that institutions are made up of all the people, behaviours, and ways by which any given society arranges the fundamental concerns of life: economics, education, religion, etc. Persons play parts in the institution: they ‘perform’ roles, the role being the sum total of expectations and behaviours.
