ABSTRACT

Diversity of raw materials, their sources, and conditions of acquisition and storage; existing differentiation in conversion operating systems each requiring different technologies and staff specializations; and the beginnings of differentiation in exports all pointed in the direction of differentiation by ‘unbroken processes’—putting together what belonged together, technologically, personally, and organizationally. Dr Sarabhai accepted the logic of this proposition, though he recognized that there might be practical problems of differentiating the import processes of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Both imported the majority of their raw materials from the same government-controlled sources or were subject to the same import and exchange restrictions. Even so, their products, manufacturing, and marketing methods and outlets all differed.
