chapter  2
The Unit’s Patients
Pages 16

The Unit is part o f a Neurosis Centre that serves all the United King dom under the National Health Service. It is not part o f the special services for any particular ‘catchment area’, and patients are mainly voluntary admissions referred through a variety o f channels.1 In this chapter we examine the social and psychiatric characteristics o f the Unit’s patients. While the Unit sees itself as treating ‘working-class psychopaths’, there is a certain ambiguity about the extent to which the staff and other proponents o f the methods consider their approach to be specifically appropriate to ‘personality disorders’ (as many o f the ideo logical rationales imply), or whether the methods are generally applic able to psychiatric problems o f all kinds.2
