ABSTRACT

OUR findings appear to justify the conclusion that it is possible to change social attitudes in relatively desocialized patients with severe character disorders, provided they are treated together in a therapeutic community. Our results show that six months after leaving hospital two thirds of the patients followed up had made a fair adjustment or better, and one third were rated poor or very poor adjustments (Chapter VIII); just over one-half had worked the full time since leaving hospital. We believe (but cannot prove) that the results described could not have been achieved by individual psychotherapy and hospitalization alone.
