ABSTRACT

The requirements that a complete model should meet in order to answer the main queries concerning normality and non-normality, seem to fall into two main categories: sources of knowledge and method of checking on them and explanations of the field. The peculiarity of the field of normality, psychopathology, and deviance lies in its being related to more than one level of human experience. Intellectual knowledge is the most used type of knowledge in model-building in all branches of science. The same accepted rules of logical inference are relevant for the study of normality as for any other field of inquiry. A model of normality and non-normality has to take account of and attempt to explain the following issues: Processes of decisions made concerning normality, for example, categorization including diagnosis; the place of individual responsibility and free will in phenomena of deviancy and psychopathology; and the relationship between rationality and irrationality in phenomena of accepted normality and psychopathology.
