ABSTRACT

The importance of a great deal else happening in the world was under-rated or ignored, and finally, in his anxiety to erect a League of Nations, President Wilson, the very apostle of “open diplomacy”, went into the secret horse-trading of the “Big Three” and tied his League Covenant to one of the harshest and most hypocritical Peace Treaties made for over a century. In 1920, the once-famous League of Nations Union was being organized for the essential purpose of keeping the British Government and people true to the spirit of the League’s Covenant and, in fact, it acquired greater authority in Britain than any of its sister-societies acquired in other member-countries of the League. Several months of wily manoeuvring followed, very different from the seraphic Disarmament pictures painted at meetings or religious services promoted by the League of Nations Union.
