Politics, rigour and ethics
Research always involves politics, and political issues. Research affects social policy, to varying degrees. Research also has political consequences for participants, and this is linked to considerations of rigour and ethics in research practice. In qualitative research, and in qualitative data analysis, these political issues must be addressed to ensure rigorous and relevant research. In this chapter I explore the use of qualitative research methods in the context of applied research: that is, social research designed to answer practical questions with implications for social policy.
