ABSTRACT

T HE BIRTH OF SOUND FILM also saw the birth of a new site for dance - and with it a new dance genre. The "street dance", as I will call it, takes

film dance off the stage, out of the ballroom and into the everyday life of the city street. The street dance also resulted in a reconceptualization of film dance as directors and choreographers began to realize that the camera as well as the dancer could be choreographed to create a new kind of dance-cinema. And, of course, the genre is transformed over time in response to the changing social and political climate of America's street life.
