Frank Kermode

Frank Kermode spends half of each year teaching at Columbia Univer sity, in New York, and the other half in London. He was King Edward VII Professor of English at Cambridge University until 1982, when he resigned following a serious falling-out with the producers of the longest-running show in Cambridge, “ No Speculation, Please, W e’re British!” The dispute centered, of course, on the tenure of a young don, Colin MacCabe, but in a broader sense was about the wisdom of allowing various theoretical modes, of Continental origin, a voice in the great and ancient British universities. Between 1980 and 1982 there was a general purging of such voices, fittingly leaving Cambridge to the towering and more objective geniuses of the “ Peterhouse School.”
