ABSTRACT

The present chapter explores the nature and complexities of issues surrounding culture and management in modern-day Pakistan. This has become increasingly pertinent since certain factors such as the deregulation of the economy, initiated in 1990, and exposure to the thought processes of Western management styles, in particular American ones, have reshaped the organizational environment. A striking change has surfaced in the values espoused by a new generation of employees, reflecting a modern market economy (Khilji 2002b). The establishment and growth of organizations in the private sector (both local and multinational) has vitalized corporate culture, previously thought of as ineffective. This chapter analyzes the causes, effects and managerial implications of these changes.
