ABSTRACT
Yugoslavia and Poland are the two countries in which, while the urban economy is predominantly ‘socialist’, the peasantry is predominantly private. It is worth devoting attention to the effects of this, and also subsequently to contrasting the performance of smallholder agriculture not only with the collective and state farming of the USSR but also with the different experience of Hungary.
