ABSTRACT

THIS chapter is in the nature of a conclusion and summary. In our detailed discussion of the different forms of competition, we paid special attention to their shortcomings; and this naturally raises the question as to what can be and what has been done about these shortcomings. The main function of economic policy is considered by most economists to be the maintenance of employment and price stability; but the state has important functions to fulfill also in remedying the shortcomings with which we have been concerned. To attempt a full discussion of these functions would lie far beyond the scope of this book; but they must at least be stated and some of the related problems mentioned.
