ABSTRACT
TOTAL AMOUNT OF RICE PAID AS LAND-TAX IN JAPAN.-Japan unified by Hideyoshi became now a New Japan without precedent in our history. Old Japan with independent feudal lords scattered throughout the whole country was now changed to New Japan with a strongly centralized Government. Old Japan with laws and regulations differing in every province, district, and city was now Japan ruled by laws and ordinances all issued by the Central Government. Japan unified by Hideyoshi became now New Japan, where farmers paid as land-tax about 18,000,000 koku of rice to their feudal lords.
