ABSTRACT

The final stages of the life of Jesus are often described as The Passion, a term derived from the Latin passio meaning to suffer. Some cycles of Passion imagery begin with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and cover the whole of his last week in the city, others focus on his final twenty-four hours starting with the Last Supper or the Betrayal and Arrest. Judas Iscariot is the human agent of betrayal while also emphasising that Jesus submits voluntarily to events, including his arrest, as part of God's plan foretold in Old Testament prophecy. The death of Jesus Christ on the Cross is a central event in Christian teaching. His death is the central component of God's plan to save humankind from the consequences of sin. On the third day after the Crucifixion, known as Easter Sunday, the tomb in which Jesus' body had been placed was found to be empty, and he was resurrected.
