ABSTRACT

In the present account, the classification will be the following: terms used correspond not so much to strictly defined taxonomical divisions as to morphological stages in which the transformation from prehominid simian forms to recent human forms can be followed. Chronologically, these stages run from the end of the Tertiary to the present era, over a period of at least 700,000 to 1,000,000 years, it should be noted simply that—as in often found in paleontology— this succession is true only in the broadest sense. There is actually some overlaping, each stage continuing for some length of time alongside the stage to which it has just given birth. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315017761/b30cb0f4-99d8-4c7f-9c73-328f70000ae6/content/fig13_01_B.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
