chapter  2
An economy evolves
Pages 22

Although it was generated by capitalism and proto-capitalism, the subsistence economy of Los Boquerones is not itself capitalistic. Producer, means of production and product are not separated, free labour and a labour market are not found, and surpluses are not cumulated and reinvested. But unlike the Asiatic, Germanic or feudal modes which are said to precede capitalism, the peasants' economy is concurrent with it. The problem, then, is not that of determining whether this rural structure is 'feudal' or 'capitalistic' (Frank, 1967, 1969; Laclau, 1971) but of comprehending it in relation to the larger economy of which it is a part.
