ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the activity of supervision from the supervisor's perspective. Initially it will explore how supervision can be understood in its widest sense, later focusing upon more specific concerns as the practice of supervision relates to the working context. Themes that are central to the chapter are the importance of developing a supervisory relationship, and the issues that are raised when attempting to establish an effective working alliance between supervisor and supervisee, Feaviour et al. (2002), Hawkins and Shohet (2000), Mearns (1991), Sawdon and Sawdon (1995), Stoltenberg and Delworth (1987). In addition, the chapter will investigate the role that the concept of ‘care’ plays as a guiding principle for supervisory practice, and the supervisory relationship, in the field of youth support work.
