ABSTRACT

During the quarter-century from 1641 to 1666 the London Weavers, like thousands of other people, passed through three major calamities -civil war, plague and fire. One cannot say 'lived through' for many did not survive the Civil War, which took its toll mainly of the younger men, while the Great Plague of 1665 ravaged all regardless of age or sex. Fortunately, few people lost their lives in London's Great Pire in 1666, but the destruction of property within the Citybuildings, stores, furniture, tools and equipment, records and all sorts of personal belongings-was enormous. Pew Londoners in those disastrous days escaped without damage 'in mind, body or estate'.
