The Process of Economic Growth

The soil here is so very fruitful, especially in Corn, that the Island was anciently call'd the Granary of the Western World; and we cannot but think that it may still in a great Degree deserve that Name, because at present some of the greatest Kingdoms in Europe are supply'd with that necessary Support of Life from hence. In a Word, England, which no other Nation can with so much Justice pretend to, produces of itself all that can really conduce either to the Necessities and Convenience, or to the Pleasures and Satisfaction of Life; most of her Plenties and Ornaments being expressed in this old Verse.
