ABSTRACT

By 1860 the population of the United States had increased to 31.4 million, and the center of population was moving steadily westward. The rapid growth of population was due to a high birth rate and to steadily increasing immigration. By far the majority of Americans were engaged in agriculture, but the beginnings of industrialism and of organized labor could be seen.
