ABSTRACT
The petty school in the sixteenth century was primarily a place for religious training. It always aimed to teach pupils to read and write, often teaching elementary accounting as well, but the religious aim was all pervasive. Its main reading texts were the A B C, the Catechism and Primer and perhaps the Psalter.
