ABSTRACT
Apart from the dissenting academies many private schools were founded in the eighteenth century. Some offered a classical curriculum only, but many supplemented this with a more utilitarian range of subjects. The number and survival of these schools is hard to determine until more local research is done on the subject. The following selection of local advertisements gives some indication of their nature and activities.*
