ABSTRACT
Lancaster's main motive in devising his monitorial system was to make the most efficient use of school time - both the teacher's time and the pupil's time. Its basic principle was self-education and to stimulate this Lancaster relied on a system of rewards and punishments, but above all on the fostering of a competitive spirit among his pupils.
