ABSTRACT

Education is administered and developed by the department of education within the ministry of social services. As has already been implied this system of education had schools and a curriculum based largely on an earlier tradition of British education. These schools were based on similar schools in India and while this has served a useful role since the early 1960s, many changes have been planned which will modernize the system. There is one well-established institution, the Royal Technical Institute at Kharbandi. The Royal Technical Institute is basically a secondary/higher-secondary institution which requires a Bhutan Primary School Certificate for entry to the Technical Education Certificate Course. Since the early 1960s the Royal Government of Bhutan has initiated a variety of development programmes throughout the country. The Bhutan Board of Examinations was established to evaluate the academic standards at the end of both the primary and lower-secondary levels.
