ABSTRACT

Summary: This chapter is concerned with assessment issues in relation to in-course placements. It draws heavily upon a number of Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA)-funded projects in the area of experience-based learning. These are listed in the acknowledgements at the end of the chapter. The main focus of the chapter is undergraduate sandwich degree courses with reference to two themes in particular: the aspects of supervised work experience that should most properly be assessed, and the most appropriate forms of assessment available. Discussion of the two themes is informed by references to recent relevant developments in both further and higher education. Finally, the three appendices provide examples of a supervised-work-experience (SWE) assessment typology, a suggested logbook system, and a competence-based scheme for specifying learning objectives.
