The first need, to reclaim judgment, derives from the unprecedented pluralism of contemporary belief. Such pluralism is responsible not only for much of the confusion, paradox, and contradiction of modem life but also for a growing paralysis of human judgment and will. This observation has been made by a number of cultural critics, and the conclusion they draw is surely correct: we must first understand what is happening before the mind can once more be free to entertain beliefs and to act in light of them.
