ABSTRACT

A revolutionary from the age of fourteen, Maribel Duriez has grown up within the Frente, a fact which gives a unique perspective to the life story of this young physics teaching assistant at UNAN, the national university. Dressed casually in blue jeans and white shirt, Maribel Duriez spoke with confidence and candor about the extraordinary events of her life, including her capture and torture by the guardia; her asylum in Mexico where she went to recover from the emotional trauma of her ordeal; and her return to Nicaragua in a combat role. Since the revolution, this remarkable militante has worked for the army and the Frente, and she has both taught and studied at the national university. Here she describes her pre- and post-revolutionary activities, her growing feminism, and her concern that for many university students, the revolution is largely a vague childhood memory.
