ABSTRACT

The care with which he treats his sharpened pencil and his neatly organized folder suggests immediately the seriousness with which this slender young campesino regards both his studies and his educational mission. Juvencio Salgado began his vocation as a volunteer teacher in the famous literacy crusade of 1980, after which he taught in the follow- up program over the succeeding four years. In the process, he postponed his own secondary education, while at the same time strengthening his commitment to education for himself as the way to help other campesinos. For Juvencio, “education and religion have worked together,” in teaching rural adults, in serving as a delegate of the word in his Christian base community, and in choosing his course of study at the prepa, the secondary preparatory school in León, where he is now a scholarship student.
