ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the Germany for friendship and hopes that even in an integrated and federal Europe it will intercede and, through lobbying, arguing and presenting one's case, lean on others. The Germany already is, but will increasingly be an influence with clout on whatever government will be in power in those countries in Eastern Europe which still harbour the last large reservoir of Jewish manpower. The question is, how does it fit with the national interest of Germany. The reason why the author have this muted optimism is that he really believe in the course of pragmatic humanism of this German people from Adenauer to Weizsacker. Therefore author finish on this wildly optimistic note and apologise for the pianist's last chords but there are some Leitmotivs in what he have played that are relevant to the meetings of yesterday and today.
