ABSTRACT

I n the course of this study, we have seen that African-American Islamic expressions are numerous, diverse, and sometimes at odds, but are nevertheless growing and maturing into a distinct Muslim culture. We have also seen that African-American Islamic communities have often been misrepresented, that their Islamic interpretations have been heavily influenced by outsiders, and that they have all struggled to find an authentic or at least viable Islamic expression. Rather than stop with these generalizations, let me briefly review what I can see as the evolution of African-American Islamic expressions.
