ABSTRACT

UCLA has emerged as a world-class university, and the composition of its student body has changed dramatically. During the period that Don Nakanishi fought for tenure, UCLA came under a cloud of accusations. Asian/Pacific Americans challenged UCLA for allegedly setting quotas on admissions. In the next phase, publications are reviewed, and accomplishments appraised by the ad hoc committee. Another recommendation is submitted to a larger campus committee, known as the Committee on Academic Personnel (CAP) at UCLA, which reviews the reports and submits its own recommendation to the Chancellor. The tenure system operates from the premise that reviewers will apply their best objective judgments, free from the bias or petty animosities which characterize many decisions outside the academe. Two additional qualities of professors, however, stand out - intelligence and arrogance. Grievance committees usually consist of professors who volunteer their time and are usually inexperienced in legalistic procedures.
