Having taught literature, theater arts, and film criticism for twentythree years in what is now an inner-city, culturally mixed, predomi­ nantly African American all-girls school, I find myself thinking about Lorde's question as I go about the business of transforming the silence of adolescent girls into language and action. I have spent more than two decades listening to and trying to understand the female voices that I hear, my own included.
