ABSTRACT

I NEVER MET THE MAN, but it was not really necessary. He had been gone from the CAD Lab over a year by the time I arrived, yet his reputation was established and secure, and I could figure out a lot about him by watching the others. Although only a master’s student, Steve Wampler had coded the bulk of the fifteen-thousand-line CAD program called ACSYNT/VPI (ACSYNT-V-P-I) in less than six months, producing more than eight hundred flow charts to map the logic in the code. Dr. Myklebust once told me, “We want students here with creativity and drive. Steve was one.”
