ABSTRACT

When it was announced that Carousel was closing after only eleven months at Lincoln Center, I couldn’t have been alone in feeling an awful sense of regret. The celebrated production had been praised to the skies and gave musical revivals a good name. Once or twice every few years if we’re very lucky something comes along that is so fine and right, we can’t imagine it being staged any other way. Nicholas Hytner’s beautiful production of Carousel is—was—such a landmark.
