ABSTRACT
Throughout most of the twentieth century, under both colonial and postcolonial conditions, Africans have responded more to sociocultural ideologies than to socioeconomic ideologies. Sociocultural ideologies focus on issues of identity, ancestry, sacredness, and social values. Socioeconomic ideologies concentrate on solidarities of class, economic interest, and economic transformation.
