ABSTRACT

In this chapter I focus on the differences between Kaisse’s (1985) Connected Speech (CS) account of the phonology-syntax interface and MIR. In Kaisse (1985) and MIR phonological rules can make reference to two distinct levels of representation in a derivation. Although MIR is greatly influenced by Connected Speech, there are some crucial differences between the two theories. This chapter discusses these differences and shows that MIR can account for certain data which Kaisse’s (1985) theory could not.
