ABSTRACT
A composer's knowledge and understanding of the relationships among voice, text, and music is crucial to his understanding of how to write for the voice. In this area, a singer acts most like a composer, dealing with the codified sounds of a language in order to communicate. The choices a singer makes regarding intelligibility, expression, and emphasis are often a refining of similar decisions an able composer confronts in the creative process.
