ABSTRACT
In recent years there has been a tremendous upsurge in the quest for traditional magical practices among modern South Africans, and the traditional Zulu healers, the inyangas and the isangomas, are more popular and numerous today than ever before. This rise in popularity is seen especially in urban areas where traditional religious experts specialize in modern problems such as unemployment, traffic accidents, HIV/AIDS and crime (Munk 1997). The healers have medicines to protect a person from being shot, and medicines to evade the police. They can offer a client medicine to win a court case as well as to make him or her popular. If the medicine does not work, you can simply return to the healer and get your money back. However, clients seldom do (Munk 1998).
