ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors outline the etymological origins of the phrase ‘jungle’ and discuss the extent to which the term is pejorative or ideological. This chapter investigates the distinctions between the terms ‘jungle’ and ‘drum ‘n’ bass’. Although such a position is not without controversy, drum 'n' bass is essentially a near synonym for jungle, although they accept that there are jungle subgenres, such as ragga jungle, which are generally not considered to be drum 'n' bass. Although there was an early attempt at literalism during the ragga jungle period, with jungle fans wearing jungle camouflage trousers and jackets, green string vests and the occasional piece of safari wear, the later sartorial style of jungle featured clothes designed by Versace, Moschino and Armani.
