ABSTRACT

The concept of a healthy workforce has changed since the establishment of the Healthy and Safety at Work Act in 1974. This legislation required employers to ensure the adequate health, safety and welfare of their employees and was under the jurisdiction of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Over the past two decades, much attention has focused on the health risks associated with the working environment, controlling the use of known or suspected hazards, the establishment of safe working practices, provision of first aid and helping with the rehabilitation of workers following injury or sickness. These initiatives represent a philosophy geared towards the prevention of ill-health or injury. There has been very little emphasis placed on the use of the workplace to actively promote good health practices by employees.
