ABSTRACT

The anticipatory simulation of full-sized architectural space can take on various forms, being used for different times, for different purposes and at many stages in the design process. The full-size simulation of architectural space involves large-scale elements and requires considerable expense, time and space in production. The convincing excursion into an imaginary, nonexistent or unbuilt architectural event is of tremendous importance to the architect and the artist. Architectural design, however, has not always been merely a process of creating actual buildings but also functions as a vehicle for pure architectural research, that is, a process of envisioning new concepts and ideas. The ability of high-end CAD programmes to provide walkthroughs and flythroughs allows our mind's eye to take predetermined journeys through and around the dimensions of a design in flux. The designer is dematerialized and transposed to be digitally represented by and within the same information system that represents the design.
