ABSTRACT

It is a privilege to be invited to present a paper at this conference, the more so because this is a conference of paediatric physiologists! In such company I acknowledge that there is some risk in presenting an argument based upon data gathered by the rather “soft” techniques of interviewing and questionnaire administration. After all, how do we know whether our subjects are telling the truth, are consistent with it, or even know what it is! However, I hope to show that despite the difficulties of measurement, which are truly significant, consistencies about moral behaviour in a sporting context can be identified and that physical education and sport can, and possibly do, have an impact upon it.
