ABSTRACT

The Open University (OU) was founded in 1969 to extend opportunities for university education to students outside the conventional education system. It has grown to become the biggest university in the world, with 450,000 students, all of whom are served by its central campus in the new city of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. However, the OU is unlike almost all other universities in that its students work through the medium of what is now referred to as ‘distance learning’. The campus is, therefore, primarily the location for academic staff and administration. The Berrill Building is, in essence, an office building that houses a number of university departments and the principal visitors’ reception to the campus.
