ABSTRACT
ON the afternoon of Monday, 26 June, 1882, Edward Henry Palmer, journalist working on the Standard and living in Mecklenburgh Square, received an invitation from Lord Northbrook, First Lord of the Admiralty: would he be good enough to take breakfast with him on the morrow 7 He accepted with alacrity; and shared the early meal with a Colonel Bradford and a Captain Gill.
